Driven: Peugeot e-208 – electrification for the French city car

The French electrification has returned to AutoReport’s test drives in the form of the new Peugeot e-208 city car. The urban car came to convince us that it will be a formidable competitor in its segment and that it will conquer Europe’s major cities. For now, it came to Bucharest.

The new generation Peugeot 208 comes with a new, original, distinctive and bold design. We also dare to say that it is the most handsome subcompact available now on the market. A large part of the design touches on the 508 have been taken over and adapted here as well. The front has a light signature highlighted by optical blocks with LED technology visible both day and night, with the characteristic effect of the 3 claws. The checkered grid displays the Leo logo in the center, making an immediate impression. The number 208 is proudly on the nose of the hood.

Longer, wider and with a lower ground clearance than the current Peugeot 208, this new generation adopts a distinctive silhouette, which evokes the athletic character of this model. The wide, well-defined wings and the accentuated lines of the body bring a note of sensuality. The rear diffuser has a glossy black finish, and can be equipped, depending on the engine, with a chrome exhaust.
Distinctive exterior elements decorate the new PEUGEOT e-208: the monogram “e” and the Lion in dichroic shade, grille of the same color as the body, the wheel arches painted in glossy black, diamond alloy wheels on 17 ? with elements that improve aerodynamics.

Electric power
Under the hood we have a 100% electric engine that develops 100 kW (136 hp). It is coupled to a CVT transmission that delivers power very efficiently. The electric motor is powered by a battery strategically placed under the floor to maintain the same space available on petrol or diesel versions, but also to lower the car’s center of gravity. The autonomy of the model we tested is over 350 kilometers in urban regime. The dynamic behavior is similar to versions with classic motors, but with a plus to the sprint on the spot for this electric version.

The interior

Inside, the surfaces are made of plastic that and sophisticated materials are used, such as Alcantara leather, but also a gray texture that seems to be made of recyclable materials. The door panels and dashboard are made of a texture which resembles carbon fiber. Also here, the French are innovating with the new Peugeot i-Cockpit 3D. The touch screen has 10 inches and can be controlled by direct touch controls near Toggle Switches or by the new voice command. The Mirror Screen feature available on the new Peugeot 2008 is compatible with MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Four USB sockets (including type C) are available, as well as induction charging. TomTom Traffic connected 3D navigation indicates real-time traffic status and risk areas. Inside, we find better materials than the old generation, and the design is charming and innovative. In 2008 we can accommodate 4 people with luggage and shopping, which makes us say we are satisfied in terms of space.

Driver Assistance
As befits a car of the future, the e-208 features state-of-the-art driver assistance systems: adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function and EAT8 transmission, lane keeping assistance, Full Park Assist, automatic braking, state-of-the-art emergency and collision warning, active lane departure warning, driver alert, automatic road light switching, speedometer recognition and recommendations, blind spot monitoring system, electric parking brake.
